Hunan Province lies to the south of Dongting Lake, one of the three largest lakes in China. In fact, the word Hunan literally means “south of a lake”!! The Yangtze River also runs across the entire province from North to South.

Blessed with such bountiful natural resources, Hunan played a key role in commerce, culture and customs of the southern part of China. Mao Zedong (the chairman and the founder of the People Republic of China) and Zeng Guofan (a top official in Qing Dynasty) were both born in the Hunan province.

Changsha is the capital city of Hunan. It was a key city right from the time of the Qin dynasty, known as an important commercial city and a major rice market. It was also an important staging post for Qin expeditions into Guangdong province. It was a fortified city as early as 200 BC. During the Han Dynasty it was the capital of Changsha Kingdom, an imperial fiefdom of the Han.

Within its border, ancient tombs and historic relics can be found everywhere from the Yuelu Mountain to the Han Tombs at Mawangdui and the Kaifu Temple.
