Lhasa, which means "Land of the Gods", is the heart of Tibet. Over 1,300 years old, it sits in a valley right next to the Lhasa River. In the old quarters near Barkhor are still homes drawn from its Buddhist past.

The Eastern end of Lhasa is home to monasteries and one can still find many monks, draped in traditionally dresses spinning a prayer wheel and engaged on a kora (a journey around a Buddhist shrine).

The Drepung Monastery in Lhasa, one of the 'Three Great Monasteries' (the other two being Ganden Monastery and the Sera Monastery), is considered the most important monastery in Tibetan Buddhism. Covering an area of 250,000 square meters, it held 7700 monks at its peak and is still the largest monastery of its kind. Seen from afar, its grand, white construction gives the monastery the appearance of a heap of rice, from which it derives its name.

Shigatse is an ancient city in Tibet, with a recorded history of over 1000 years. South of the city lies the Tashilhunpo Lamasery, one of the four lamaseries of the Galu sect of Lamaism and the residence of the Panchan Lama for long. Lying in the shadows of the Nima Mountain, Shigatse, with an average elevation of 3,850 meters, is situated at the converging place of the Yarlung Zangbo River and the Nianchu River. With its well laid out roads and unique architecture, the city is the birthplace of the Banchen II, III & IV and the Dalai Lama II.

It is wet and warm in summer, while dry and cold in winter. There are about 130 days of sunshine, 120 frost free days and 120mm of rain every year.

The Tibetan cuisine reflects its local climates and customs. Few crops grow at the high altitude that characterize Tibet. The most important crop is barley. Flour milled from roasted barley, called tsampa, is the staple food of Tibet. Milk, butter and cheese are a also a key part of the Tibetian cuisine.

Meat dishes are likely to be yak, goat, or mutton, often dried, or cooked in a spicy stew with potatoes. Mustard seed is cultivated in Tibet, and therefore features heavily in its cuisine.

One can find a variety of sweet dishes made from flour flavored sugar and combined with fruits or dried nuts. The food is traditionally served with bamboo chopsticks and a soup bowl.
